LinkedIn is a great way to grow your network and find new people who may be interested in your products or service. However, you need to be careful not to frustrate your brand-new connections or even worse, fall into LinkedIn jail. Here are our top tips for growing your network the right way.

  1. Don’t pitch to connections right away. Imagine that someone sends you a friendly connection request on LinkedIn. You connect straight away and five minutes later… you get a mini-pitch. Chances are, you’ve hit the ‘remove connection’ button before they can send a follow-up request. There’s nothing wrong with selling on LinkedIn but build up a connection first
  2. Don’t send pitches to random people. If you send connections to people you don’t know and they report you as spam to LinkedIn, the chances are that you will end up in social media jail for either a while or a lifetime. Connect with people you know or people in the same industry as you and remember, LinkedIn is not a numbers game!
  3. Take the time to know your network. If you want to sell on LinkedIn, take the time to understand your network. Like their posts and congratulate them on their achievements. Ask them questions and share things that they may enjoy. They will get to know who you are and what you do and when the time comes, they will come to you
